Costs for several things in Ilorin are cheaper than you can ever ever imagine. The town doesn't have shortage of opportunities, the amount of companies and businesses has boosted as the boundless business culture helps it be an illustrious city for entrepreneurs and investors. The funny thing is that all the seven billion people in the world will not even fill up the Grand Canyon in the United States not to talk of one single state in America. Yes, we are that tiny. There is so much land all over the world uninhabited. So I am really surprised when I see people killing themselves over land, like in Israel and Palestine. It makes no geographical sense, for those of us in love with geography. So much space all over. For example, the Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter) in Saudi Arabia is the largest sand desert in the world, it is bigger than many African nations combined and it is very sparsely populated. I wonder why people kill themselves over a few miles of land. Afterall, we are all migrants and no one actually originally owns any land anywhere on earth.  We all migrated one way or the other.

The principal god worshipped in the town of Okuku is Oloku. This god was brought by the ancestors of Okuku from Ile-Ife almost 1.2 million years ago and his priest is called Aworo. 

The yearly festival of the god takes place when the first yams are ready, towards the end of May or the beginning of June. The Aworo then goes to his farm and brings back a yam which he divides into four pieces and places on the shrine of Okuku. The Aworo and the chief of Okuku, the Olokuku, Cook and eat pounded yam, after which the people of the town start to use their own yams and their is a general celebration.

1. ABIA STATE
As many might have guessed (yelz…lol), Abia is an acronym derived from the name of the four main groups of people in the state as at the time it was formed in 1991. These were the: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato and Afikpo. Former Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu (hin too dey talk joor) is from Bende while Lambert Ndukwe, one of the richest men in Nigeria in the 50s (he imported stockfish from Northern European nations like Norway and exported cotton back) was from Isuikwato. Afikpo now belongs to Ebonyi State and as for Aba, we all know berra…lol! Okay, let’s roll!

6. BAYELSA STATE


Famed for being the homestate of our dear President (where the First Lady also known as Mama Ice Cream is also a Perm Sec), Bayelsa is also the place of Samson Siasia and Finidi George. Let’s continue before we delve into football…lol! How the name came about is quite interesting. In the old Rivers State, it was the tradition to use acronyms when naming the local government areas (LGAs). For example, Brass LGA was simply called BALGA, Yenagoa was YELGA while Sagbama was just SALGA. And since it was the people of these three former LGAs of Rivers State that clamoured and fought for the creation of the state forming the State Creation Movement, the name that they finally agreed upon was this:

BA + YEL + SA = BAYELSA. Simple. No long thing.

5 BAUCHI STATE:
Nicknamed the Pearl of Tourism (check out Yankari). ‘Bauchi’ is Hausa word meaning the southern flanks of Hausaland. Tribes living in the southern parts of the Hausaland were referred to as kasashen bauchi and the area they lived in later came to be known simply as Bauchi. Then, kasashen bauchi included the areas that we now call Bauchi itself, Plateau State, Northern Niger, Southern Sokoto (that includes Yauri and Zuru) and Southern Kaduna (hello to my Barnawa friends). It was a major center for the slave raiders of the day. In another rendition, the state was named for Baushe, a famous hunter who settled there before the 19th century while another states that ‘bauchi’ is Hausa word for slavery since it was a center for slave raiders. You decide.

4. ANAMBRA STATE
Okay, this is pretty straightforward. It was derived from the name of the Oma Mbala (Omambala) River (in Ibo, the native name of the river is Ànyịm Ọma Mbala). Anglicize the pronunciation and you have Madam NAFDAC’s homestate. The river is quite long o, about 210 kilometers, it is a major tributary of the River Niger, the most important below Lokoja. Yep! Let’s keep rolling.

The former president of Nigeria and his countrymen should have been saying this when Nigeria was selling out the Libyan people at the UN Security Council.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed what many in Africa feared from the NATO attack on Libya:

"We knew that at the end of the Libya operations, there would be fallouts. And the fallout would be where would all the weapons go? Where would be some of those who have been trained how to use weapons [and] how would they be accounted for? ..."Part of what is happening in Mali is part of the fallout from Libya, and we should not expect that Mali will be the last."

Unemployed graduates in Nigeria to receive ₦19k monthly allowance?

That's just what a committee at the on-going National Conference is suggesting...for all unemployed graduates in Nigeria to earn a regular allowance comparable to the allowance of members of the National Youth Service Corps, which is N19,800. Punch reports that the conference's Committee on Law, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Reform made the recommendation but it can only fall through if it's accepted by the Federal Government.  A person in the committee said the recommendation was one of the ways the committee members felt that crime might be reduced in the country. He told Punch;

"The recommendation is our own way of finding solutions to the rising wave of crime in the country and to also force the government to do the needful for the increasing number of unemployed graduates in the country. We have done our part and it is left for the delegates to either reject or accept it at plenary.”

Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom has revealed the Federal Government's plans to roll out made-in-Nigeria vehicles into the market next month, June 2014. The Minister made this known when he received a delegation from Automobile Peugeot, France in his office in Abuja, Punch reports.

The minister, while addressing the delegation which included the company's Vice President, Mr. Yves Moulin, said the newly introduced auto policy is quite effective and is attracting automobile brands to establish assembly plants in Nigeria. Continue...
